4 Books to Read and Films to Watch Before Going to Cuba

So you’re planning a trip to Cuba? Why not indulge in some of the country’s finest literature and most representative cinematic pieces before you go? Here are my recommendations:

Explosion in a Cathedral by Alejo Carpentier

Set during the French Revolution, this book depicts its effects on the Caribbean and its inhabitants.

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

A short novella telling the story of a Cuban fisherman down on his luck, battling with a giant marlin.

Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy by Carlos Eire

Autobiographical, Waiting for Snow in Havana is the story of the author Carlos Eire, who was airlifted from Havana in 1962 with thousands of other children and taken to the US.

Guys and Dolls
The classic 1955 movie in which a gambler tries to seduce a member of the Salvation Army in New York, by taking her to Havana.
