7 Things to Read and Watch Before Going to Hawai’i

So you’re planning a trip to Hawai’i? Why not indulge in some of the country’s finest literature and most representative cinematic pieces before you go? Here are my recommendations:

Honolulu by Alan Brennert

The sad story of a young Korean bride sent away in 1914 to marry a man she does not know.

The Islands at the End of the World by Aush Aslan

A survival story set in Hawai’i. When electronic failure means the islands are isolated from the rest of the world, father and daughter Leilani make the journey home between islands.

Hawai’i by James A. Michener

An epic history of the islands and their inhabitants through the ages.

Pearl Harbour

The story of two young men during the bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1942. This is considered to mark the beginning of American involvement in WWII.

Lilo & Stitch

This classic Disney film shows a young Hawaiian girl making an unusual friend.

Hawai’i Five-0

Having never seen the original series, I’m recommending the remake that portrays the islands’ finest fight crime.

The Descendants

Set and filmed in Hawai’i, George Clooney’s character Matt King attempts to repair his relationship with his two daughters after his wife falls in a coma due to a boating accident.
