Covent Garden, London

It’s almost that time of the year again. The nights are drawing in (in the northern hemisphere at least) and there is a chill in the air. It’s November, which in London is basically December nowadays and means Christmas season is in full swing.

One of my favourite places to visit at this time of year is Covent Garden. Of course, it’s wonderful all year long but in the winter the markets are just so much more exciting and walking around with a hot chocolate is perfectly valid. Speaking of, Costa had a salted caramel cappuccino on the seasonal menu last year and the nice baristas would turn it into a salted caramel hot chocolate for me. I swear I put a few kilos on from that alone. Thankfully, it looks like it’s back this year and I can’t wait to go get one (or ten).

Back on topic though, Covent Garden is a wonderful place for a meander, as the central market is jammed packed with plenty of shops and cafés to browse through. I personally recommend stopping off at La Durée for macaroons and delicious tea, Clos Maggiore for a romantic French meal and Balthazar does a great breakfast and snazzy cocktails in the evening. If that weren’t enough, the surrounding area has more restaurants than you could wish for and it’s only a few minutes stroll away from Strand and its theatres. If you prefer more classical entertainment, the Royal Opera House is home to spectacular operas and ballets, in addition to magnificent views over the plaza.
