The Tamayo Museum or Museo Tamayo is a tiny museum of contemporary and modern art. It lies on the same stretch in the Bosque de Chapultepec as the National Anthropology Museum, but is much smaller. It only has a few permanent rooms and one temporary exhibition room, which had sadly just closed the day I visited.
The museum began as the personal collection of Rufino Tamayo, a Mexican painter from Oaxaca and his wife Olga Tamayo. They founded the museum in 1981 with the aim of sharing the art with the Mexican public. Some of Tamayo’s own work has since been added to the collection. The museum also has a wonderful gift shop full of quirky trinkets and books, and a café with a terrace.
